Professor Sir Terence Stephenson

Professor Sir Terence Stephenson

Professor Sir Terence Stephenson is Nuffield Professor of Child Health at the Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health, University College London and Chair of the Health Research Authority for England.

He was knighted in the 2018 New Year Honours for services to Healthcare and Children's Health Services. He was selected as an National Institute of Health Research Senior Investigator for 4 years from April 2022.

Professor Stephenson was Chair of the UK GMC 2015-2018, the regulator of 237,000 doctors.

Before the GMC role, he was Chair of the UK Academy of Medical Royal Colleges 2012-2014 and President of the UK Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health 2009-2012. 

In these roles he has worked with five Secretaries of State for Health in Westminster governments of three different parties.

He has been elected an honorary Fellow of eleven national Colleges or Academies, in the UK, Ireland, Hong Kong and Australia.

Professor Stephenson was formerly Dean of the Medical School and Professor of Child Health at the University of Nottingham and a non-executive Director of Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust.

He is an honorary consultant in paediatrics at UCL Hospital and Great Ormond Street Hospital London and has co-authored seven textbooks. He studied computing and physiological science before medicine. His research has mainly been in physiology of early life and acute and chronic paediatric illness. Professor Stephenson has published over 330 peer reviewed papers, commentaries and book chapters. As a researcher he has received over £15 million in funding through 50 competitively awarded grants.
